FWM: You have spent your career in the entertainment business. What surprises you the most today?

I am consistently surprised when I read actor’s complaining on social media that they’re not booking. They literally write down all of their auditions, callbacks and zero bookings right there for all the world to see. Instead, I’d love to see them write, “I’m going to find a solution to change my stats. I need help to become exceptional at auditioning and booking acting jobs.”

FWM: “The actor must approach acting like an Olympic Athlete.” Explain

I never like to work with actors that look for quick fixes. They need to approach their career like an Olympic Athlete and practice every day. Why would anyone who runs a multi-million-dollar network want to hire you, if you’re not at the top of your game? They find the cream of the crop. Actors who understand the art of competition and work hard at their craft to be exceptional.

If you look at any Olympic Athlete, they approach their sport with precision, dexterity and intense focus. You can lose the gold by less than a fraction of a point. The only way they beat their competition is to practice, practice, practice. These Olympians don’t “fit it in” or “cram” for their competition. They take it dead serious and compete to win.

“The actor must approach acting like an Olympic athlete. The more you practice the necessary skills, the more you will book. When a high level of discipline and concentration on the work is achieved, you will see incredible results.” Amy Lyndon

FWM: What is the key to booking acting jobs?

Not only does the actor need to understand how to break down a script according to the writer’s intent, but they also need to understand tone, style and genre and why they’re in the script. You can be a great actor but not for their particular project. Another important criterion is power. If you don’t know who you are, where all of your emotions are placed and the ability to access them, then how are you going to connect with the material? If you’re not connected to the character and their circumstance, then why should your audience connect with you? You are the gift. You are the “it” factor. There’s so much more to it, but that right there is a strong start to understanding how it works.

FWM: Tell us about the Amy Lyndon Master Class.

I teach about 100 actors every week. For all 3 of my Master Classes and Saturday Intensives I personally hand pick scenes specifically designed to improve my student’s skills by stretching them to work on their weaknesses until it becomes their biggest strength. The scenes are emailed 3 days before class, so that they have time to prepare the scene as if it were a real audition using “The 15 Guideline Map to Booking Technique.” The goal is to book it on the first take.

It’s always going to be the actor’s approach. If the approach is wrong, then the powers that be might not necessarily see their talent. By using this Technique, actors will absolutely have the tools needed to feel confident, empowered and always know what they are doing. When they know what they’re doing, then they fill strong to go after it.

So, there’s the physical technique and then there’s the philosophy of booking.

Who has impressed you the most in your class?

My students impress me every time I’m with them. It takes bravery and tenacity to be an actor. I should know, I’ve been an actress since I was 10.
